Pinecone fishes have a black mesh pattern on a yellow background and have a unique round shape. The dorsal and pelvic fins are stiff and thorny, and the scales are as sturdy as armor. Their lower jaw has a photophore with luminescent bacteria, but it is unclear what they have.
